Believe it or not, the bagel (originally “gjevrek”) has origin since ancient Byzantium. Even today, some countries are trying to prove and adopt the origin of the bagel, but one can say with certainty, we have the most delicious “gjevrek”.
Many would say that Ohrid is recognizable by the Ohrid Lake, the Ohrid fish trout, the Ohrid Pearl, but is the list complete? Yes, I agree those are recognizable symbols and an inseparable part of the city and our country, but still, in the first place in my bucket list dominates the irreplaceable Ohrid cooked bagel.
I do not believe that something could replace the delightful aroma of the Ohrid cooked bagel which spreads early in the morning through the old bazaar and its crunchy taste, mmmmm 😊. The Ohrid bagel with its perfect recipe will restore your strength and fill your stomach. Rich with proteins, carbohydrates and fiber – is a good way to start the day, and it can also be a good snack between two meals.
Its composition contains the finest wheat flour, salt, yeast, sugar, sesame and water. The recipe is very simple, but let’s see you guess it! After mixing, the dough is divided into pellets and shaped into its widely recognizable shape. Then, it is placed in hot caramelized water to cook. Once the piles come to the surface, they are brought right in the oven to bake. They are perfectly baked when the most experienced master Goran, employed in Zito Leb – Ohrid says so.
We had the honor to be invited to the factory that produced the most delicious Ohrid boiled bagels so that we can see and make sure with our own eyes how this gourmet bagel is made. I would like to express my gratitude to the employees, who were not only hospitable, but also fully dedicated to show us the magic of making Ohrid cooked bagels kept throughout the centuries and transmitted as a tradition from generation to generation.
But despite the fact that the name of this cooked bagel clearly states that it is “Ohrid’s”, now it can be also found in other cities throughout our country.
I know people who, while the bagel could be found only in Ohrid, without a thought, traveled 178 kilometers, only to try Ohrid boiled bagel – receiving orders from their closest ones to bring to them as well. Oh, you people from Ohrid. At first you conquered us with the Ohrid Lake, than with the Ohrid cooked bagel.
Now, enough talking 😊 Take the bicycle with you and feed your soul with a hot cooked and crunchy Ohrid bagel from the nearest bakery, combined with an ice-cold and perfectly served Coca-Cola. Cheers!
