“WHEN I WAS A STUDENT” WITH DZIAN EMIN: THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT I DID NOT LEARN AT COLLEGE

He is a multitalented musician. He play several instruments, he is dedicated to conducting, music is his life. Dzian Emin is our interlocutor in the section “When I was a student”, which it is realized by Fakulteti.mk in cooperation with Pivara Skopje. He did not hesitate to go at the Faculty of Music in Skopje, where he graduated horn in 1997.
– Thank you for the epithet “multitalented”. I gained the basics of music education at the Secondary Music School “Ilija Nikolovski-Luj”. By analogy of things, if you want to continue to deal with music, the Faculty of Music Arts in Skopje follows. After the entrance exam I was first on the list with the most points. Of course, I was very happy, “says Emin.
He says he was committed to things he considered a priority. He rarely attended lectures on the main subjects, but maximally used the allowed absences from many other subjects.
– At the faculty we have many courses with individual instruction and it is normal that these professors are developing a closer relationship, unlike those in group teaching. My horn teacher, Levce Trajkovski, has helped me a lot in the process of understanding the instrument. Certainly there are many professors from whom I learned how not to. The fact is that no one can teach you music in the true sense of the word. This was confirmed by a leading conductor Emil Tabakov in one of our conversations in the field of conducting. Professors can give direction, but in the end, the choice remains to you what kind of decisions and solutions you will make. The feeling of exploring and taking risks in music has not left me yet, and I am happy because of that – Dzian is categorical.
The grades were not important to him, he says: “Maybe because of my highness.”
– Evaluation may be stimulating certain people, but I’m convinced that it also demotivates a lot. Music is not a sport. It is a suptil art that requires serious spiritual deepening for real perception. The professor should succeed in awakening this feeling and the need of the student. I do not believe that with good or bad evaluation this is achieved – says Emin.
A few years ago, he again went on a college, this time at the department conducting, in the class of Borjan Canev.
– The whole process from the present perspective is completely different. I am glad that I decided to take such a step, because some knowledge has been confirmed and a whole new issues and dilemmas have been opened at the same time. My way of listening to music has changed and the more distant horizons have been conceived. My re-enrollment at the faculty was from another prism of perceiving things and of course the musical maturity in which I am, made me deepen even more in my activity – says Emin.
We asked him if rewriting at the Faculty of Music is possible?
– The subjects where you can rewrite at the our Faculty are very few. Much of the exams are playing or singing live in front of a multi-member committee. Perhaps theoretical subjects have some conditions for rewriting, but those holes in the knowledge would reflect very badly in further education and life. I did not copy, but there are many things that I have not learned.
The student days certainly remind me of one comfort in existence and I have many beautiful memories of that period. Emin was part of many bands and earned from music in high school.
– I have been working continuously since the days of my high school, playing in cafes, weddings, various groups … From the fourth year I started working in the Philharmonic, and practically I started my real education. I was fortunate that my professor had great confidence in me and entrusted me with the position of the first choir in the orchestra. I was very proud and happy, and I’m grateful to him, because he helped me to mature as soon as possible and realize the beauty of the orchestra even when I was studying – says Emin.
He adds that it is very important that every young person can earn and care for himself.
– I wish everyone can do what he wants. If that happens in the student days it is wonderful, because the road is more exciting and interesting. In addition to the fact that I really enjoy my work and maybe now I work with more intensity than before, I feel like a lucky man because of all the things that happened to me.
He says that they had a lot of friendships with colleagues, and with some of them still.
– It’s rare for anyone to complain about social life on student days. It should be for everyone the most active period, and even better when it is found a way to keep it intensified.
We asked him if he had a desire to teach in an educational institution, to transfer his knowledge.
– So far, I have never been engaged as a lecturer. While I was more active as a horn player, I had several invitations to be part of several seminars, but because of my preoccupation, I was not able to appear at the seminars. Also, several students, and graduated musicians, asked me to hold private lessons for different music related areas, but somehow my time was still and I was still redefined for my projects, and of course, for the family. I think that I can still contribute more if I’m stage-active – Emin is categorical.
