The Community & Us

Creating and maintaining healthy and safe working environment is an integral and essential part of Pivara Skopje’s corporate culture and the development policy we support. Focusing proper attention to health and safety does not only imply being socially responsible, but it is equally one of the most important business priorities of any company and is as significant as the act of reaching any other business indicator. It is a reflection of team spirit and therefore, it requires all employees to understand the importance and maintain constant dedication towards building safe working environment pursuant to the highest international standards.

For many years, Pivara Skopje has been investing into protecting the health and safety of its employees, as well as, into educating them regarding various and relevant topic in this area. For its achievements and the activities it undertakes in this area, the company has been awarded the National Practices Award in the area of occupational health and safety. Back in 2007, Pivara Skopje was among the first companies in Macedonia to implement OHSAS 18001, leading international occupational health and safety management system.

The road to reaching our goals was filled with many stops along the way, requiring great deal of engagement and numerous activities:

  • Rising the awareness of all Pivara Skopje employees regarding the relevance of safety and health, through learning and practical exercises.
  • Promoting educational material through well-structured and clear educational messages and examples.
  • Updating materials and harmonizing existing procedures and policies in the area of health and safety.
  • Encouraging employees to share their experiences in the area of health and safety.
  • Empowering employees with the aim of assuming greater personal responsibility for their health and safety and apply our company values to all areas.
  • Elaborating topics which should contribute to constant drop of the number of employees having suffered an injury or got ill at work.
  • Leadership, through personal examples and demonstrating true dedication of all employees.
  • Promoting of Pivara Skopje’s role as a leader in the area of occupational health and safety protection in our industry.

Having in mind our commitments towards maintaining healthy and safe working environment, in 2011, in Pivara Skopje, we implemented the Occupational Health and Safety Week. Dedicating one week in October to intensive promotion and education of this significant and relevant platform has turned into tradition in our company. To us, the educational aspect is the key for raising the awareness of all employees, placing the main focus on constant learning and exchange of experiences. Within the frame of the week, we are organizing various activities, trainings, presentations, instructive exercises, and quizzes, giving each employee an opportunity to acquire new and upgrade existing knowledge.

In terms of the topic of the week, each year we put the emphasis on different topics related to occupational health and safety. So far, we have had the following topics:

  • In 2011, we started with “Six golden rules of occupational health and safety”,
  • Next, in 2012 we promoted the topic of “Driving safely”.
  • In 2013, we dedicated the week to “Managing chemical inventory and workplace ergonomics”
  • Then, in 2014 we continued with the program “For healthy and safe days at school”,
  • “Save a life” was the topic we considered in 2015, emphasizing the need for raising employees’ awareness regarding the importance of providing first aid to coworkers in case of emergency.

This year, all employees have passed through a series of educational activities aimed at educating them to provide assistance to ill or injured person in order to be able to recognize and remain calm so they would be able to act in critical moments when someone’s life is in danger.

In this manner, they are trained to easily recognize various risks and dangers and be able to react by tapping into the knowledge they have acquired in order to save someone’s life.

As a continuation of our decades-long cooperation with the Macedonian Red Cross, this year we have been working on jointly developing a series of educational occupational injuries first aid materials. We have distributed educational materials through all internal communication channels to all employees. Employees got the opportunity to identify and recognize life-threatening symptoms and have been instructed how to react in such critical moments. Within the Health and Safety Week, twenty of our employees went through the first aid training held at Pivara Skopje Educational Center. We have selected employees coming from different sectors in order to distribute the knowledge all over the company. Through the training, our employees were able to learn about the basic techniques and procedures for timely provision of first aid to an injured person.

With the help of the associates experts in the area of health and protection from the Macedonian Red Cross, this year we have provided additional educative materials available through a free-of-charge first aid mobile application (available for IOS and Android), developed by the Macedonian Red Cross, available both in Macedonian and English. The application provides fast and reliable access to indispensable information for providing first aid in the most frequently encountered emergencies in everyday life. We have also prepared quizzes that help employees learn and verify their knowledge.

Our investments and further activities in the implementation and improvement of techniques and methods ensuring occupational health and safety do not stop here. We remain dedicated to the promotion of this significant topic not only within the boundaries of Pivara Skopje, but also outside our company, in the community we belong to.
