NEW AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT BY PIVARA SKOPJE AND COCA-COLA HBC

Pivara Skopje as a joint venture between Coca-Cola HBC and Heineken stays committed to its sustainability agenda for driving continuous sustainable growth and development. The company is fully compliant with the best in class sustainability standards of the two corporate worlds it belongs to. Coca-Cola HBC receintly has confirmed the status of a global leader among beverage companies, according to accomplished results and commitments to sustainability and environmental protection. This comes after the corporation was ranked first in the global beverage industry by The Dow Jones Sustainability Index for two consecutive years. At the same time, Coca-Cola HBC stayed in first place among beverage companies and eighth on the list of TOP 100 listed on the FTSE 100 Index of the London Stock Exchange for the efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere.
The confirmation of the status of a global industry leader in sustainability motivated Coca-Cola HBC to announce new ambitious commitments for reducing water use intensity by 30% and reducing carbon dioxide emissions intensity by 50% by 2020.
“We are proud that as a member of the Coca-Cola HBC system we participate in meeting these commitments, thus contributing to saving water as one of the essential natural resources and further improving the environment in Macedonia, but also globally,” said Wietse Mutters, acting General Manager of Pivara Skopje, which within the Coca-Cola HBC system, has won the award for quality and sustainable development for two consecutive years, as the highest recognition of the implemented activities and achieved results in four areas: quality; health and safety; environmental protection and respect for the highest standards in business operations.
Specifically, the contribution of Pivara Skopje in achieving the high sustainability targets of Coca-Cola HBC has been done through implementation of several specific projects, such as: optimizing the use of thermal energy in the production of PET bottles; process heating systems upgrade by improving the efficiency of heat containment; use of solar energy for heating technical and sanitary water; independent and automatically regulated working premises’ heating system; use of energy-efficient lights throughout the company; as well as systems for process water recycling.
Thanks to the previous initiatives, Pivara Skopje significantly contributed to the total investments and achievements of Coca-Cola HBC in sustainable development such as: direct and indirect reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 7.8% per year; investment of 5.8 million EUR in plants that allow savings of 1.1 million cubic meters of water, as well as investment of 4.3 million EUR in energy-efficiency projects.
